Collaborating Against North Korea Cyberattacks
National security officials in the U.S., Japan, and South Korea are joining forces to combat the increasing cyber criminal activities and cryptocurrency money laundering by North Korea. As reported by Bloomberg, these three countries have taken a step further by addressing North Korea's relationship with Russia. The U.S. and South Korea have previously raised concerns that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has been providing assistance to Russia during its invasion of Ukraine, while Russia, in turn, has been supporting North Korea's military operations. North Korean-sponsored hacker groups like Lazarus Group have gained notoriety for carrying out high-profile attacks in the cryptocurrency industry. Platforms including Axie Infinity and Harmony have fallen victim to these cyberattacks, resulting in the loss of millions of dollars. Furthermore, the U.S. government previously claimed that North Korea was funneling illicit funds from cyberattacks and crypto thefts into its missile development program. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the United States Department of the Treasury recently made headlines by imposing sanctions on Sinbad, a popular crypto mixer. It is alleged that cyber criminals, including Lazarus Group, have utilized Sinbad to launder stolen funds. With this action, Sinbad joins Blender and Tornado Cash as the third OFAC-sanctioned cryptocurrency mixer.Collaborating Against North Korea Cyberattacks
