FBI Warns of North Korean Hackers Selling $40M of Bitcoin
In a shocking revelation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a statement, warning that North Korean hackers are looking to cash out stolen bitcoin, estimated to be worth over $40 million. This latest development comes after a series of cryptocurrency hacks earlier this year.
The Culprits behind the Attacks
The North Korea-based Lazarus Group and APT38 have been identified by the FBI as the masterminds behind the recent wave of cryptocurrency hacks. These attacks included the $60 million theft from payment processor Alphapo, as well as the $100 million exploit of Atomic Wallet. These cybercriminals are leaving no stone unturned in their quest for illicit gains.
A Continual Threat
These recent incidents are not isolated events. In fact, in January, the FBI named these same two groups as responsible for the Horizon Bridge hack, which resulted in a staggering loss of over $100 million. This highlights the persistent threat these hackers pose to the cryptocurrency industry.
The Identified Wallets
The FBI has managed to trace six wallets that are connected to these hacker groups. These wallets contain a total of 1,580 bitcoin, equivalent to $41 million. As a precautionary measure, the FBI has cautioned cryptocurrency companies against interacting with these identified wallets, as it could further perpetuate the criminal activities of these hackers.
Combating Cybercrime
Addressing the issue, the FBI assured the public that it will continue its efforts to expose and combat the illicit activities of North Korea, including cybercrime and virtual currency theft. By doing so, the FBI aims to disrupt the revenue stream of these hackers and protect the cryptocurrency ecosystem from further harm.
As the cryptocurrency industry continues to grow, it is imperative that individuals and companies remain vigilant when it comes to securing their digital assets. With the constant advancements in technology, cybercriminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated. By staying informed and taking necessary measures, we can collectively work towards a safer and more secure digital future.
